- Dikabarkan bahwa Kurt mendapatkan inspirasi untuk lagu ini, selama dia tinggal dengan keluarga temannya, yaitu Jesse Reed. Orang tua Jesse adalah Kristen lahir kembali[not-reborn], dan tampaknya mereka tercermin dalam lagu Lithium sebagai seorang yang 'menemukan Tuhan'.
- Sebuah lagu, dengan kata-kata yang dirangkai Cobain, bercerita tentang seorang pria yang setelah kematian pacarnya dan ternyata hanya agama-lah "sebagai pegangan terakhir untuk menjaga dirinya bertahan hidup dan untuk mencegah dia dari keinginan bunuh diri". Pada tahun 1990, Kurt berkolaborasi dengan member Screaming Trees 'Mark Lanegan - pasangan itu telah menulis (namu-belum dirilis) album bersama-sama, dan Cobain ingin nama proyek Lithium.
