Catatan
- Waktu itu Kathleen Hanna dari band Bikini Kill pernah menuliskan "Kurt smell like teen spirit" di dinding Kurt Cobain. Namun Kurt salah mengira, menurutnya tulisan itu sebuah pujian yg ditujukan padanya dan mengacu pada gerakan "teen revolution" yang saat itu jadi perbincangan muda-mudi di Olympia. Namun sebenarnya, Hanna menuliskan tentang bau badan Kurt yang mirip merk deodorant wanita.
- Dalam Come As You Are dikatakan, ketika Michael Azerrad menuliskan kata "The Hit" dia sebenarnya merujuk pada lagu "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Dan hal ini membuat stigma bahwa band dibebani ketika mereka merilis salah satu lagu mendapat perhatian lebih daripada kumpulan seluruh katalog lagu mereka.
- Untuk video musik, Kurt terinspirasi dari sebuah film tahuan 1979-an, film petualangan dan pemberontakan dari sekelompok remaja yang disebut Over The Edge (bintangi utama adalah Matt Dillon). Kurt ingin video musiknya menggunakan tema yang sama dengan film itu. Tapi sutrada Samuel Bayer menolak ide Kurt, karena ia berpikir, MTV tak akan menyiarkan tema tentang pemberontakan seperti itu. Bayer dipilih sebagai sutrada video musik mereka sebab ia memiliki demo yang buruk. Teen Spirit adalah video musik pertama yang digarapnya.
- Berikut adalah naskah asli yang diinginkan Cobain untuk video klipnya: Berlatar bekang sebuah pesta di sekolah. Semua berjalan seperti biasa, sampai beberapa orang pemuda memutuskan untuk menghancurkan daerah itu hingga mobil dan rumah-rumah. Mereka para pemuda itu kemudian menculik kepala sekolah dan menahannya di gimnasium. Akhirnya mereka membakarnya.
- Di akhir produksi klip ini jadi sedikit melunak. Band membagikan brosur di tanggal 15 Agustus 1991, band mengundang teman-teman mereka untuk tampil. Seluruh pengambilan gambar memakan waktu sekitar sepuluh jam. Di akhir penggarapan menjadi sedikit gelisah, sehingga kerusakan yang Anda lihat pada video klip ini sebenarnya tidak ada dalam naskah. Semua gambar yang Anda lihat dari Kurt diambil selama selama sesi akhir penggarapan. Dia frustrasi dan tidak ingin melakukan syuting lagi, dan Bayer pun terpaksa membujuk Kurt untuk melanjutkan syuting. Kurt sangat dipengaruhi editing video tersebut.
